About the Ethiopian Annual Leave Calculator

Annual leave is an important employment benefit that allows workers to take paid time off from their jobs. In Ethiopia, annual leave entitlements are clearly defined in Labour Proclamation 1156/2019, specifically in Articles 74 through 79. All permanent employees in Ethiopia accumulate paid annual leave based on their years of continuous service with the same employer.

The leave entitlement system in Ethiopia follows a tiered schedule that rewards longer service. In the first year of employment, workers are entitled to 14 working days of annual leave. This increases to 15 working days in the second year, 16 working days in the third year, and 17 working days in the fourth year. From the fifth year onwards, employees receive 20 working days of annual leave per year. It is important to note that these entitlements are measured in working days, which excludes weekends and public holidays.

This calculator helps you determine your total leave entitlement based on your years of service, how much leave you accrue each month, how many days you have earned so far in the current calendar year, and if you provide your salary information, the monetary value of any untaken leave. The daily pay rate used in these calculations is determined by dividing your monthly salary by 26 working days, which is the standard working days per month used in Ethiopian employment calculations.

When employment ends, any untaken annual leave must typically be compensated as cash payment, so understanding your accrual is also important for financial planning during job transitions.
