About the Ethiopian Payroll Calculator
Ethiopian payroll involves two distinct cost perspectives that both employers and employees need to understand clearly. For employees, the primary deductions from gross salary are the pension contribution and income tax. The employee pension contribution is set at 7 percent of gross salary and is deducted before income tax is calculated, meaning it reduces the taxable income. Income tax itself is calculated using progressive bands established by the Ethiopian Revenue Authority under ERA Proclamation 979/2016.
The income tax system in Ethiopia operates with a tax-free threshold of 600 ETB per month. For taxable income above this threshold, progressive rates apply, starting at 10 percent for incomes between 601 and 1,650 ETB, and increasing through 15 percent, 20 percent, 25 percent, and 30 percent before reaching the top rate of 35 percent for monthly taxable income exceeding 10,900 ETB. Your net take-home pay is what remains after both the pension contribution and income tax have been deducted from your gross salary.
From the employer perspective, the true cost of an employee extends beyond the gross salary. Employers are required to contribute an additional 11 percent of gross salary as their share of the pension fund. This means that a worker with a gross salary of 8,000 ETB per month actually costs the employer 8,880 ETB in total. Understanding this total cost to the employer is essential for creating accurate hiring budgets, negotiating job offers, and conducting financial planning for businesses operating in Ethiopia.
Ethiopian payroll is governed by Labour Proclamation 1156/2019, which establishes employment terms and conditions, and ERA Proclamation 979/2016, which defines the income tax bands. This calculator accurately models both the employee and employer perspectives, allowing HR managers, business owners, entrepreneurs, and individual employees to quickly understand the complete cost structure and take-home pay for any salary level in Ethiopia.
